The Name and Family of BABB
(General information about origins of name & family.)Origin of the BABB name (BAB, BABP, BABBE)
The Babb's first came from Devonshire and London England in the 1600's settling on the Isle of Shoals off the coast of New England.
Bavarian Babbs (Bap or Bapb) settled in the mid 1700's in Philadelphia PA.Based on research of Elizabeth Babb of Yarmouth, ME, the Babb name comes from the Middle East. "In Saracenic (now Arabic, Semitic) BAB means Gate or Door. In England we find a BABBWELL, Suffolk' which is the Northwestern gate of Bury St. Edmonds, and was famous in the 12th C. as the site of a hospital for wayfarers and a launching point for Crusaders to the Holy Land.
BABBACOMBE in Devon is the name of the bay between Hope's Nose and Torquay and Teignmouth which help frame the entrance to the Teign River."Source: Babb Families of America, Jean A. Sargent, introduction.
